20th Century

Few major changes have been made in the church in the century following the "great restoration" of 1861 and 1862.

About 1908 the organ was rebuilt and moved to the Cullerne Chapel corresponding to the Warneford Chapel on the south side of the chancel.

A Special Evening service was held in St Michael's Church on Sunday 11th February 2001, which included the Laying-Up of the Highworth and District Royal British Legion Branch Standard.

The faculty was obtained some time ago and the Standard was fixed in the South Transept near the window that commemorates the four Brown Brothers from Eastrop Grange who were killed in World War One.

Representatives and Standard Bearers from Chiseldon, Faringdon, the RAF Association, Swindon, Penhill as well as the Ladies and Men's sections of the Highworth Branch were present.

Following a welcome by the Reverend David Stevens, Vicar of Highworth, the Standard to be Laid-Up was presented by the President and Chaplain of the Highworth and District Royal British Legion, the Reverend Alan Homer. The vicar then carried the Standard to the South Transept and the Bugler sounded the "Last Post".

The rood screen across the entrance to the chancel and also the east window, over the altar were given in 1933 - 1937 by Miss Mary Hambidge, a member of St. Michael's who died in 1940. Sir Harold Brakespeare designed the rood screen.

In 1974 the organ was again moved and rebuilt in the north transept.

The Cullerne chapel was re-ordered and is now the Cullerne room which is used for social gatherings and meetings.

The children's chapel which was in the north transept was at the same time moved into the south transept and latterly, since the choir sits opposite the organ, has been re-established as a Children's Corner at the back of the south aisle.

Church Room

The Church Room, situated opposite the north door ( Cullerne Room ), has been completely re-furbished, work being completed in 1996 and used from November of that year. The official opening was January 1997. The main meeting room and also re-furbished stable block directly underneath are available for hire to all church denominations in Highworth and the local community.
