wiltshire ride + stride
saturday 14th september 2024
The 40th Wiltshire Ride and Stride will now be officially launched at St Mary's Church, Lydiard Tregoze at 10am on Saturday 14th September by the Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Troughton, who is also the President of the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. The President and other Trustees will then separately visit some of the open churches and chapels around the county to thank the welcoming teams and to present their church or chapel with the small (6-inch) commemorative Welsh slate plaque/mat as a token of appreciation for the support for Ride and Stride 2024. The plaques are funded from a bequest made by the late Lord Brooke of Sutton Mandeville, who over many years was a great champion of Ride and Stride.
This is an annual national sponsored event, organised locally by County Historic Churches Trusts. Wiltshire Ride + Stride (or its predecessor the Great Cycle Ride) has been going since 1984 and has raised over £1.5 million for the county’s churches. 50% of the money raised goes to the participant’s chosen church and the other half to the County Historic Churches Trust.
It takes place on the second Saturday of September between 10.00am and 6.00pm each year.
Participants may be cyclists, walkers, horse-riders or drivers of mobility scooters. They can be of any age, but under-13s must be accompanied by an adult.
All denominations are welcome.
Visit as many churches as you like, planning your own route.
Seek sponsorship from friends, relations and colleagues, so much per church visited or a lump sum.
